Paragraph for Tuesday, Feb. 18:
- On the next day, the king kept his men in their camp, so that he would avoid wearying them by a long march and an indecisive battle. Meanwhile, the enemy, having sent out reinforcements, were waiting for an attack from our soldiers so long that they were unwilling to fight. After noon, the king, seeing that the spirits of his men were so restored that they had limitless courage, struck forth and attacked the enemy unawares. Of the enemy, scarcely 500 survived out of an original number of 3,000; and if night had not fallen, the slaughter would have been complete. Thus did the fortune of our army change, and the legions of the enemy retreated back across the river under the cover of darkness so that we could not pursue them and finish our bloody work. And those who stayed behind despared of their safety, fearing slavery while we exulted in victory and freedom.
