Oedipus Cycle – Independent Work Assignment

Dear Mythologians! While I’m gone, I’ll post things up here for you guys to work on. It’s a big departure from how we normally do the Dramatic Cycle unit with lectures, but you guys are champions and shall get through it!

First Assignment – Oedipus the King

  • Part One – Read the text of Oedipus the King here. After that, read through the lecture notes we would’ve discussed normally here. After reading those two things, you can grab a partner or small group and compile a list of references and allusions to other mythological subjects we’ve gone through this year: other gods, other myths, other heroes, etc., and write a few short sentences each about how they connect to Oedipus. Exemplum gratiae, on the first page, there are references to Zeus, Apollo, and Cadmus – how do those myths relate to what Oedipus is saying, etc.
